Last Friday, Mark Poland attended a special Remembrance Day ceremony at Queen’s Park. Premier Dalton McGuinty presented plaques to the families of nine soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

In April, Mark’s brother, Ryerson Image Arts alumni Cpl. Brent Poland was killed along with five other Canadian soldiers when a bomb exploded beside their light-armoured personnel carrier in the Maywand district just outside Kandahar.

Seven months later, RyersOnline talked with Mark about the path that led his brother from Ryerson to Afghanistan.

The 39-year old man came  from Darfur in 1995 as a refugee.
