» Ryerson’s local motive: is the campus food provider Aramark as green as it should be?

Where does your food come from? For Ryerson students, the simple answer is Aramark.  Ryerson has had an exclusive contract with the company since 1993.
However, where Aramark gets the food from is more difficult to answer. There’s no literature about Ryerson’s participation in the local food movement on campus, or any indication of which farms grow the produce Ryerson students are eating.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, on the seventh floor of the Ted Rogers School of Management building, a group of third- and fourth-year hospitality and tourism management (HTM) students get down to work. They transform the Cara Demonstration Kitchen and Common Room into RU Dining, a full-service restaurant, for a 90-minute lunch service.

Their monsters have names and personalities. Some of them are pretty big, but for the most part, you could squish their heads in your hands. They don’t speak, but if one of them just doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the monster brood, the three former Ryerson students nip the little beastie in the bud.

A Ryerson film student's fourth-year project has been selected as one of Canada’s Top 10 short films of 2008 by the Toronto International Film Festival Group. 

 

» Growing toward a sustainable campus

A quick tour of the University of Toronto’s sprawling St. George campus reveals a school that, for all intents and purposes, is old. The University of Guelph, too, which lies just an hour outside of Toronto, is a sweeping campus studded with stunning 19th century architecture. These buildings are nowhere near becoming decrepit, but they’re certainly no marvels of modern design.
