Toronto will soon see new food vendors taking up street corners with everything from pad thai and spring rolls to jerk chicken. The program is called Toronto A La Cart and it’s all part of a new initiative by Toronto City Council to promote diverse, nutritious food.
However, the project has not been without it’s hiccups. Some critics of the project say the process to apply has been difficult, with fees that are too high and regulatory hoops that are too onerous.
Covering the cost of the program has been first and foremost in the minds of participants. Nancy Senawong owns Toronto restaurant, Thai Angels and is also one of the vendors who was chosen to participate in the A La Cart program. Senawong, a recent immigrant to Canada has concerns over the fees as they seem to be mounting every day. She has also struggled with completing some of the paperwork needed for the project and the bank loan she has had to take out. Listen in as Nancy, and her business partner, Peggy discuss their hopes and worries as they work towards their cart’s opening day.
