Undivided they stand
The newest members of the Ryerson Students’ Union (RSU) executive committee plan to keep the political organization “Undivided” in the next school year.
“We plan on working in unity with the rest of the board to achieve the goals we set out,” said president-elect Jermaine Bagnall.
After three days of voting earlier this week, the Undivided slate emerged victorious, sweeping all positions on the RSU executive committee and a slim majority on the board of directors.
But even though members of the same slate will dominate the RSU next school year, Bagnall said he plans on working with all representatives toward ensuring the school becomes a better place for students.
“(Once elected) slates no longer exist. You’re the (governing body) and people need to work together to make positive things happen,” Bagnall said. Liana Salvador, who will be vice-president education, said she plans on maintaining unity within the RSU by creating more opportunities for communication.
“I want to have discussions before meetings so we can all talk about the issues,” Salvador said. “I also think that education is key. We need to tell people the facts . . . so that they can be informed.”
In 2007, former RSU executives Nora Loreto, Heather Kere, Chris Drew and Abe Snobar ran on the same slate, but soon found themselves bitterly divided.
Bagnall thinks this can be avoided in the upcoming term.
“I think the big thing is that, across the board, people respect me. I’ll be able to bridge the gaps and bring people together,” he said.
