CKLN chair still vacant
The Ryerson Students’ Union might not have a voice on CKLN’s board of directors for a while.
Samih Abdelgadir, the latest RSU representative on the board, resigned at an RSU board meeting held on Feb. 26.
He said one of the reasons he resigned was that he felt like an outlaw on the board.
“I felt like I was ganged up on,” he said. “Their conduct didn’t make me feel included. My voice wasn’t that effective.”
And no one is stepping in to replace him on the board. RSU president Nora Loreto said no one wants the position.
“It’s not a surprise that CKLN is not a place where students want to be,” she said. “It’s a mess.”
The station has been in a tight spot since its membership voted to impeach the board’s non-student members on Feb. 23, citing unfairness in the appointment of the current program director. But the board’s members refuse to acknowledge the validity of the impeachment. There is the possibility of the situation going to court.
“Anything like this is always harmful to the station. It can leave CKLN in a very dangerous situation,” said Mike Phillips, the interim station manager.
“Perhaps they (another RSU representative) feel it would be uncomfortable to do something.”
Abdelgadir also said the RSU shouldn’t be involved with what’s happening at CKLN.
He told the RSU board during his motion to resign that the impeachment issue was one of the reasons he was stepping down.
Loreto, who has the power to appoint a replacement to the board, said she won’t force anyone into the position if no one wants it.
