CKLN must be transparent
CKLN is in trouble again. The community radio station’s board of directors has angered many of its volunteer programmers by shutting them out of decision-making. While the board may have been right to discuss legal matters in camera, its unilateral appointment of Tony Barnes to the post of interim program director was a shameful move.
When Tim May left the position in December, a fair and open hiring process should have followed. Instead, staff and volunteers were suddenly informed that the board had appointed Barnes to fill the role for one year.
But Barnes is himself a member of the board, and a controversial one at that. Nonetheless, perhaps he is the best person to direct CKLN’s programming – but he should have had to prove that in a formal and open hiring process. The board failed to post notices about the position or consult anyone about the selection of a replacement.
Though each full-time Ryerson student spends about $9 per year in fees on the station, few have any idea what goes on at CKLN. Of late, interested students have found it easier to volunteer at the station. And that’s a great boon for those who want to gain broadcasting experience in a radio institution that’s well respected off-campus.
But the board needs to listen to and make peace with its volunteers and staff. A governing body that closes its doors to the community can do no real good.
