Dental plan debate

Disagreements and accusations about mismanaged funds obtained through the health and dental plan are flying following a recently released RSU audit.Deloitte & Touche LLP put out recommendations following its audit of the Ryerson Students' Union Members' Health and Dental Plan, as well as RSU election procedures last week. Among the results of the $85,000 audit was the recommendation that the RSU keep better records of the money owed to students.

Rye helps close disability homes

For years, Ryerson’s school of disability studies has fought to prove that institutionalizing those with intellectual disabilities is wrong.By speaking at conferences, contributing research, and teaching students about social inclusion, the program’s faculty members have been activists in urging the government to close these institutions. Finally, the school’s hard work has come to fruition, while demonstrating that universities can influence government policy.

Ryerson's local motive: is the campus food provider Aramark as green as it should be?

Where does your food come from? For Ryerson students, the simple answer is Aramark. Ryerson has had an exclusive contract with the company since 1993.However, where Aramark gets the food from is more difficult to answer. There’s no literature about Ryerson’s participation in the local food movement on campus, or any indication of which farms grow the produce Ryerson students are eating.

Women's hockey shoots for CIS

The wins may not be coming in yet, but Ryerson’s new women’s hockey team is working hard with an eye towards future glory.Having just finished its second season, the team is still a Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) probationary team and it has one season to go before it can compete against other universities. Until then, the team is getting ready to be a contender against other universities.“It’s not something that you can just do overnight,” said Stephanie White, the team’s coach. White led Canada's National Women’s Under-18 team this year to a second place finish against the U.S., along with coaching her first season for Ryerson.

Feminine, functional fashion

Most of the models Kristin Poon uses for her lingerie line, Cloven, are thin and young, holding dramatic poses and serious faces under strategic lighting and beautiful backdrops. But one model stands out. She is striking, with her wide, genuine smile and casual stance. She looks different than the other models. She is shorter and older, but equally beautiful. She is Poon’s mother, and is also the inspiration behind Cloven.Poon, 27, was only in Grade 4 when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. One mastectomy and 17 years later, Poon’s mother is in remission.

Sports vote passes with 74% yes

Ryerson will soon be home to a new athletics facility, after students voted Yes last week to a mandatory $126 fee hike to support its construction and maintenance.
“I am thrilled with the results of the referendum,” president Sheldon Levy said. “I can't wait to start working with students on ideas and plans for the new facility. Ryerson students deserve the best, and I want to ensure that they have lots of input and the facility meets their needs.”
Of the 32,738 full-time and part-time Ryerson students eligible to vote, 4,754 hit the polls.

No anti-discrimination policy in outlines

Ryerson students won’t be seeing an anti-discrimination statement on course outlines next fall, despite recent race-related problems that have been cropping up and reported on campus.
On March 3 the course management review committee passed the new policy that directs what professors must include in course outlines.
The outlines are used to explain to students course structure, processes, and objectives and also include acceptable behavioural conduct.

I Tunes U allows students to skip

Reviewing lecture material is as easy as downloading a song off ITunes for students in some classes where professors are experimenting with a pilot version of Apple’s popular file-sharing platform.Using the same design platform as ITunes, ITunes U allows universities to upload educational media content in the form of podcasts to push lectures beyond the classroom.Program director and electrical engineering professor Dimitri Androutsos records a lesson on a PC tablet. The recording shows him solving equations for his engineering students and also records his voice. The final product is converted so students can use it anytime.
